Land of the rising sun

With Sable and Argent’s recent investment into Japanese cycling streetwear brand CCP, I decided to head back to Japan to see what other cycling trends were emerging from the land of the rising sun.
The first thing that strikes you about Japan’s cycling culture is its street presence – literally. There are an estimated 86 million bicycles in Japan (2010 figures). The law not only allows, but encourages, bikes to be ridden on the footpath. Despite Japanese real estate being notoriously hard to come by, the width of the sidewalks are bigger than some Japanese hotel rooms I have seen!
The streets around the train stations are clogged with mamachari (“Mothers Chariot”), Japan’s ubiquitous utility bike usually used for taking children to school and collecting the groceries. Around Ginza and the business districts many business men can be seen riding folding bicycles and mini-velos. Head to some of the uber cool, youth oriented precincts such as Shibuya, Harajuku, and Shinjuku and the ‘fixies’ rule the streets. Naturally this is where I spent most of my time, exploring well know ‘fixie’ haunts such as Carnival and W-Base (Harajuku), Geek Garage (Nakameguro), and Sexon Super Peace (Shibuya).
Perhaps the best fixed gear store in all of Tokyo is Blue Lug in Hatsudai. Owned and run by all-round nice guy Toshihiro Ashikaga, this store has expanded from a humble single shop a few years back to three adjacent shop fronts and now manufacturing its own bags and cycling products.
For a quieter pace I checked out what Japan’s cultural city Kyoto has to offer in the way of fixed gear bikes. After hiring some bikes from Kyoto Cycling Tour Project I hailed the nearest fixie rider I could find. He turned out to be a well-known Japanese sprint racer who recommended Darwin, Ayahadio and Messenger KAZE. After circling Kyoto’s back streets for 45minutes without finding Messenger KAZE I stopped a courier rider to ask for directions. Turns out I had stopped the owner of the shop, Yasuyuki Handa, who opened up his store (Wednesday’s are official holidays for fixie shops in Japan).
Back in Tokyo I paid Kinfolk a visit. I have been watching these guys for a while and love what they do (so does Wallpaper* Magazine – awarding Kinfolk as 2010 winner in “Best Ride” category of their annual Design Awards). Kinfold is a small, independent band of designers, illustrators and bike enthusiasts: Akira, John, Maceo, Ryan and, Salah. Kinfolks’ minimalist frames are painstakingly handcrafted by 70-year old master Shuichi Kusaka (respectfully referred to as Kusaka-sensei) and crowned with a headbadge designed by Marco Hernandez. Influenced by vintage Japanese and Italian track bikes, these frames are expertly handcrafted and customizable, with only a few frames created each month.
The Kinfolk lads ‘office’ becomes the Kinfolk Lounge bar at night – serving drinks and relaxed conversation into the wee hours.
One of Kinfolk’s creations, featuring the Kinfolk’s “Run with the hunted” logo
These guys have done some great collaborations including a customized bike for Nike, a collapsible bike for Wallpaper Magazine and recently a range for K-Swiss.
Stay tuned for more news on Kinfolk as Sable and Argent bring this “thinking man’s fixie” to Australia.
Until then, Sayonara!
Bike Lock with Style
Posted in Accessories, Bicycles, NEWS, Reviews on September 22nd, 2010 byThe Cyclock modern wall bike rack was designed by Andrew Lang in the UK. This super functional modern wall bike rack was the winner of the Consumer Product Design of the Year award. The timeless bicycle wall storage device par excellence. The CYCLOC wall bike rack is both incredibly practical and pleasing for the eye.
The simple solution to bike storage. Mount the CYCLOC on the wall for vertical or horizontal bike storage. The special shape of this wall-mountable bicycle storage rack guides the bike frame securely into place. The CYCLOC wall bike rack can accommodate a wide range of frame shapes. CYCLOC can be oriented for the bike to hang either vertically or horizontally. Without questions, one of the most advanced and functional racks for bicycles. Bike storage has never been prettier and you will love the space savings.
A bike can be kept safe in public spaces simply by using a regular bike lock. Accessories can be stored conveniently inside the CYCLOC. Soft contact pads provide frame protection.
The CYCLOC wall bike rack includes all the parts needed for wall installation with exception of screws. Customer needs to purchase screws; the type of screws needed will depend on the type of wall you will be using. Easy solution: purchase them locally at your hardware store.
